Regular attendance is vital for your child’s success, helping them to achieve their best and develop important life skills.
At Newington we offer all pupils lots of incentives and rewards for good attendance becasue we know that good attendance is crucial for children to learn and develop. If you are not in school you cannot learn.
We use the SOL Attendance Diamond to support good attendance. it is our aim that all of our pupils fall into the 'green zone' on the diamond. As soon as any pupil falls out of the green zone class teachers and the attendance team work with pupils to improve attendance. Attendance is tracked weekly for all learners by class teachers and the senior leadership team.

Parents and carers are legally responsible for ensuring their child attends school regularly and punctually. Failure to do so could result in legal action by the local authority.
Under the Education (Pupil Registration) Regulations 2006, only the school can authorise an absence – not parents or carers.
Time off for holidays during term time is not a legal right. Any request for a leave of absence must be made in advance by completing an absence form and submitting it to the school office. If a holiday is taken without permission, the absence will be recorded as ‘unauthorised’ and could result in legal action.
You can read the government advice here:

Regular school attendance is essential because:
If you need to request a leave of absence during term time, you must complete a leave of absence form and return it to the school office. Please note that email requests cannot be accepted.
HOLIDAYS DURING TERM TIME
The Department for Education states that children MUST attend school and there is no legal proviso for term time holidays. At Lift Newington our aim is to prepare pupils for their future lives and careers. With this in mind, we require parents to observe the school holidays as prescribed. In exceptional circumstances pupils may be granted a leave of absence. Parents need to complete a leave of absence form availble here or from the school office. All holiday requests MUST be received by the school office a minimum of 4 weeks before the holiday start date.
If your child has a school attendance record of over 97% and the holiday is for 10 school sessions (5 days) or less the school has the option of agreeing to the request on the condition that the application is made in line with the definition for exceptional circumstances. Leave of absence requests will not be authorised for any pupil with attendance below 97% regardless of the circumstances.
The leave of Absence Request Application can be found here.
Examples of exceptional circumstances include;
-Service Personnel and other employees who are prevented from taking holidays outside term-time
-Acute crisis within the family, where the family needs to spend time together to support each other
-Court order/formal agreement where parents have separated
Please note that all holidays requested that are not classed as an exceptional circumstance will not be authorised and will be subject to a Penalty Notice of £160 per child, per parent from Hull City Council.
